Why we built the quiz

One in five mattresses bought online gets sent back.

The wrong mattress is one of the most expensive mistakes you can make online. Not because of the price, but because of what happens next. Most returned mattresses can't legally be resold for hygiene reasons. They get collected, driven, and almost always end up in landfill. That's the cost no one shows you at checkout.

The real reasons mattresses come back

Why people return a mattress, and what the quiz fixes.

We pulled data from the UK's Better Sleep Council, Mattress Nerd's 2024 sleeper survey, the Sleep Foundation, and NapLab's owner-satisfaction database. Three in four mattress returns come down to four solvable problems. Here's the breakdown.

How the quiz handles each one

Four solvable problems. Four quiz questions designed around them.

Solves the 35%

Firmness questions weighted by body type

Two questions on weight band and sleep position calibrate firmness recommendations using the Kovacs Lancet protocol, not a single "soft or firm" toggle.

Solves the 22%

Pain points trigger zoned-support models

Lower-back, hip, or shoulder pain in the quiz lifts our zoned-spring options (LuxeErgo 3400) to the top, with documented pressure-relief benefits.

Solves the 18%

"Sleep hot?" goes straight to LuxeTherm

One answer steers hot sleepers to our gel-cooled Zero Gravity™ foam and EnduraSpring™ airflow models, removing the most common temperature mismatch.

Solves the 8%

Partner motion boosts pocket-spring picks

Couples and light-sleep partners surface models with up to 3,400 individually pocketed springs, the build that scores highest for motion isolation.

The hidden chain

The journey of a returned mattress, and what it really costs.

When the fit is wrong, the return is not free for the planet. Here is where a mattress goes after the courier collects it from your door, and the emissions baked into every leg of that trip.

Step 01 · Delivery

Out to your door

A delivery van averages 35 to 50 miles per drop and around 3 MPG fully loaded with bulky furniture.

~6 kg CO₂
Step 02 · Return

Back to the warehouse

Wrong fit means the same lorry comes back, doubling the transport footprint of a single order.

2× emissions
Step 03 · Sorting

Can't be resold

UK hygiene rules mean returned mattresses almost never re-enter the supply chain. They head to disposal.

<5% resold
Step 04 · Disposal

Landfill or recycling

Only 19 to 24% of UK mattresses get genuinely recycled. The rest take up to 120 years to break down.

75% landfill
A returned mattress isn't a refund line on a spreadsheet. It is a lorry trip, a landfill slot, and roughly 80 kg of CO₂ that could have been avoided with a better question at checkout.
Why we redesigned the quiz
The UK picture

What 7.5 million discarded mattresses actually look like.

Mattresses are the third worst landfill offender in the UK, behind sofas and duvets. They take up an estimated 40 cubic feet each, and most contain materials that won't break down for a century. Figures from the National Bed Federation and the UK's leading mattress recyclers.

7.5M UK MATTRESSES EVERY YEAR
Landfill 75% Recycled 19% Reused or other 6%

Data: National Bed Federation, TFR Group, BusinessWaste UK (2023–2024)²,⁵

22M UK adults discard their mattress in less than 7 years, earlier than the recommended replacement window.
42% of bulky landfill waste in England is furniture. Mattresses and sofas lead the list.
28–34× Landfilled mattresses generate methane, a greenhouse gas this many times more potent than CO₂. UK landfills produce 22% of national methane.
5 × Stacked, the UK's annual mattress waste would fill Wembley Stadium five times over.²
How we designed the quiz

Most mattress quizzes funnel you to the same bestseller. Ours doesn't.

A typical mattress quiz uses hard filters. Pick "side sleeper, firm, hot" and three answers later your range of 12 mattresses collapses to two. We rebuilt the matching engine from the ground up so every mattress in the Luxe range can win, for the right sleeper. Here's how a single take works.

01

Body and sleep style

Sleep position, weight band, and dominant pressure points. We translate these into weighted scores for spinal alignment, side-sleep cushioning, and back-sleep support.

02

Comfort and climate

Hot sleeper? Pain in lumbar, hips, shoulders? Firmness preference on a 1 to 10 scale. Each becomes a score multiplier, not a yes or no filter.

03

Real-life context

Partner motion, budget honesty, UK size, current mattress problems. The quiz respects what you can't change about your bedroom or wallet.

04

Scored, not filtered

Every Luxe mattress gets a match score against your full profile. You see a #1 pick plus two honest alternatives. Premium, value, or cooler. The decision feels like yours.

A good quiz makes you confident in three options. A bad one pretends there is only one. We chose three.

The matching logic and question design were built with input from sleep specialists and reviewed by an academic researcher in the field. What looks like an eight-question quiz is, underneath, a weighted decision model rooted in published sleep research.

What the research says

The three studies that shaped our scoring weights.

Mattress fit is not a matter of taste. There is three decades of published research that links specific mattress properties to specific sleep outcomes. Three findings sit at the core of our model.

Study 01 · Firmness and back pain

Medium-firm beats firm for chronic lower back pain.

A landmark randomised controlled trial in The Lancet followed 313 adults with chronic low-back pain over 90 days. Those sleeping on a medium-firm mattress were twice as likely to report improvement than those on a firm one. Population studies show 60.78% low-back-pain prevalence among soft-mattress users versus 37.64% for firm.

Kovacs FM et al., The Lancet 2003 · Bryte 2024 population review⁸,¹³
Study 02 · Sleep position and pressure

Body type predicts fit better than preference.

Pressure-mapping research in Applied Ergonomics across five firmness levels found BMI was a stronger predictor of optimal firmness than sleep position alone. Sleepers with higher hip-to-shoulder ratios needed more surface compliance for neutral spinal alignment. Which is why our quiz asks both body type and position.

Applied Ergonomics study (PMID 26220771); Sleep Foundation reviews
Study 03 · Cooling and sleep depth

Cooler beds mean deeper sleep.

Core body temperature drops by roughly 1 °C during deep sleep. Mattresses that trap heat, particularly all-foam beds in UK summers, shorten REM and increase wake events. 60% of UK mattress buyers now cite temperature regulation as a top priority. Active-cooling hybrids materially reduce this effect.

Common questions

What people ask before they start.

How long does the quiz actually take?

About 60 seconds. Eight questions, single-select on most, visual answers where it helps. We'll send your personalised match and full breakdown to your email so you can revisit it any time.

What's different about your quiz versus the ones I've taken on other sites?

Most online mattress quizzes use hard filters. Pick three or four answers and you get pushed into the same two or three bestsellers everyone else sees. Ours uses weighted scoring. Every mattress in the Luxe range gets ranked against your full profile, and you are shown your top match plus two genuinely different alternatives (often a cooler option and a better-value option). It respects that there is rarely one "correct" mattress.

Is the quiz biased toward your most expensive mattress?

No. The scoring weights are tied to sleep-research outcomes (pressure relief, spinal alignment, motion isolation, cooling), not margin. Our most-recommended mattress varies meaningfully by sleeper, and the LuxeTherm Hybrid (one of our mid-priced models, from £337) is currently the most frequent top match for hot sleepers.

What if I get the result wrong?

Every Luxe mattress comes with a 100-night trial and a 10-year warranty. If the mattress is not right after a proper trial period, we will arrange free collection and either exchange it for a different firmness or model, or refund you in full.

Why do you talk so much about returns and landfill on this page?

Because the wrong mattress is one of the highest-carbon mistakes a UK household can make online. 7.5 million mattresses go to UK landfill every year, and the return-shipping-disposal chain on a single wrong-fit order is roughly 80 kg of CO₂. A better-targeted quiz is genuinely the cheapest, lowest-impact intervention in the entire supply chain, so we treat it as a product, not a marketing gimmick.

Do I have to give you my email to see results?

No. Your top three matches are shown instantly. You can optionally save them to your email or share them, but the result is yours to see whether you opt in or not.

Will the quiz work if I have a specific medical condition or chronic pain?

The quiz includes specific options for chronic lower-back pain, shoulder pain, hip pain, hot flushes, and partner-disturbance issues. The scoring weights are tuned to favour mattresses with documented benefits for each. That said, for serious medical conditions we would always suggest combining the result with your GP's or physiotherapist's advice.

Is the quiz designed for the UK market specifically?

Yes. Sizes are UK standards (Single, Small Double, Double, King, Super King), pricing is in pounds, and the comfort range reflects what we know about UK bedrooms, central heating, and the British summer. We are hand-built in Britain. The quiz is tuned to match.
